Course description: This course will explore issues of Color and Design in Textiles, Aesthetic aspects of textile construction and embellishment will be explored through the history of textiles, using slides and examples from the Cornell Costume and Textile Collection. This course will also explore color  principles; color trends; science and technology of color measurement; and pigments and dyes in relation to textile design.

Required readings:   A textbook, World Textiles: a Concise History by Mary Schoeser (London: Thames and Hudson, 2003) is required. Additional articles and other readings will be available online at http://char.txa.cornell.edu/370.htm.

 

Learning outcomes:

*Increased knowledge of the historical evolution of color and design in textiles as a resource for the designer and manager of design
*Increased understanding of color theory terminology and its application in the design of textiles
*Increased understanding of color principles, standards, and measurement in relation to the textile and apparel industry and textile design
*Understanding of color trend  research methods and their application to design in textiles
*Develop the ability to analyze and apply this information to the design of textiles and apparel


Course assignments: The course grade will be based on the following assignments:

Project 12/4 and/or paper 12/10

Lecture material will be evaluated by one short exam on color theory, a prelim and a final exam. The final exam is not cumulative. The project/paper will be an opportunity for the student to demonstrate their ability to interpret and analyze aspects of textile design. This assignment has been designed to allow students with different goals to pursue their interests.
