PREPARING FOR THE PRELIM
Consider the following:
Aesthetics Can you distinguish the characteristics of textile design
from each historic period / ethnic region? Can you recognize elements in designs
that have been introduced from other times or places? Can you recognize or
describe the color palette and typical design elements of a period or region?
(A list of the regions/periods you should be able to distinguish is below)
Trade What are the important trade relationships over the course of
history? How do these change, why and when? How do these trade relationships
affect textile design?
Technology/technique What technologies or techniques are developed?
When and where? How do changes in technology affect textile design?
Innovators What individuals or groups are important in development
of textile design in certain periods/regions?
Terminology Be able to recognize and
explain special terminology associated with certain periods, regions, or types
of textiles (roundel, tiraz, toile de jouy, palampore, etc. etc.)
The exam covers ALL readings, certainly the textbook, as well as images and
text from my powerpoints and lectures. You
will have +/- 30 slides connected with questions that will be a mixture of
multiple choice and short answer. There will be additional questions (25-30 ) without pictures. The answers will be short answer, at
most a couple of sentences required.
Here is a list of the periods/regions I expect you to be able to recognize.
I will not specifically ask you for dates, but dates will help you keep things
straight. You will be able to identify an image by date or by name of period.
Early textiles (before 2nd c. BC)
Classical Roman era (2nd. c. BC- 5th c. AD)
Byzantine (5th-15th c.)
Early Medieval (5th-11th c.)
Later Medieval (12th- 15th c.)
Islamic textiles
Renaissance (1450-1520)
Mannerist (1520-1620)
Textiles of India
Textiles of China
Early Baroque (1620-1660)
Late Baroque (1660-1730)
Rococo (1730-1774)
Neoclassic (1774-1795)
